Re: Forget SOI - Intel claimed it didn't need copper on 0.18 micron process

Intel Revenues are down 25%, profits down 50%. AMD revenues and pre-tax profits have been up, despite a tough market.

All since AMD started shipping volume copper at .18. AMD's aluminum chips on .18 run at about the same clock speeds as Intel's aluminum chips.

If the copper had nothing to do with that, what did? A complete lack of any design ability at Intel? Intel's chip design budget is about 10 times that of AMD's - but if Intel's FABs are equivalent or superior, then Intel's design teams must be at fault since they couldn't come up with a product worth producing.

Or are Intel's FAB engineers complete incompetents? If the designs were OK, and copper is irrelevant at .18, why couldn't Intel's FABs produce competitive chips? Are you claiming that nowhere in Intel is there anyone with a clue when it comes to manufacturing?

AMD has been - literally - eating Intel's lunch in Intel's core desktop CPU market for the past year.

I concluded that a key reason was AMD's advanced technology that uses copper and pods (where Intel may be about to catch up), you say copper and pods had nothing to do with it. So why don't you tell us why Intel's revenues and profits are collapsing? If copper can't help Intel, are their problems permanent? Is Intel on its way to chapter 11?
