JL: re character and integrity: Be that as it may, the only bone I have to pick with Bush about this incident is that it took five days to express "regret" about the loss of the Chinese pilot. While not excusing his action or apologizing in any way, there is no loss incurred by expressing a genuine sentiment. Bush was slow on the uptake and IMO that contributed to the Chinese brass digging in their heels.
