These little playhouses are usually within a few paces of the barn. They are within a fence, but there's well over an acre or two fenced in beyond what's needed. Everyone who uses them seems to always have the doors pointing in the same direction. (If I were in charge, I'd put them in a grid pattern. (Assuming, by then, I'd know what they're for!)) The farms range from big dairy operations to the mixed farming practiced a century ago by the Amish. I don't recall seeing any on a crop-only based farm. On occasion, I've been able to peek inside of one, and it looked empty. Direct sunlight cannot get inside, so I assumed they weren't for growing plants, but some light gets through, because they aren't dark inside either.
They are found on farms within 100 miles of where I live in Southwestern Ontario, in all directions. (I don't drive further.) I'm surprised that Illinois farmers don't use them, since our soil and climate our so similar. (We grow corn, not pineapples.)
We don't have a TSC store nearby (Tractor Supply Centre) or I could drop by and ask someone who knows.
