Allen-

I am new to posting on SI, but have read the WIND thread for over a year now. Your Mega Trend 1 post was educational for me, but I am confused on the part where you mention your debate with Ning (which I remember).

You said...
Even techies that would question the use of Microsoft software still often have the faith when applied to Unix or Linux. Thus, in many technical minds, sooner or later embedded computing will converge to the high-end, generic OS model. This is the heart of the matter about network processors Ning and I debated a year ago, in which I resisted the notion that server-type operating systems would rule the roost.

Can I assume that VxWorks is NOT a high end generic OS but that BSD is ? Is a server type OS the same as a high end Generic OS ? IS BSD a server-type OS (seems to me like it is). Is your point in this part of the post that server-type OS's will be present but will not "rule the roost" ? Would you mind summarizing both your position and what you remeber Ning's position in light of what you learned at the analyst's day ?

Thanks much to Allen or anyone who can help out a non-techie understand these points.
