What you say makes sense, except.....

If their existing FABs aren't junk, why are they scrambling to build several replacement FABs in this time of fab space glut?

And once they've dumped another $10 Billion into new-from-the-ground-up FABs in two years, just what are they going to do with the $15 Billion worth of FABs they're carrying on their books? Taiwan has tons of brand new FAB space that is just coming on line for stuff like com chips. With all that talk about how many zillions of parts Intel will be pumping out from each new 300mm wafer line it sounds like they will have to just shutter most of the existing plant. It looks to an outsider like much of Intel's existing plant is going to have to be mothballed or scraped, whether it's still useable or not - what am I missing?
