10:38pm 04/15/01 Orders for Japan chipmaking gear plunge (CAJ, NINOY) By Bill Clifford
Japanese and foreign chipmakers slashed orders for Japanese semiconductor manufacturing equipment by 49.2 percent in February to 79.02 billion yen ($636 million) -- the lowest level in two years, an industry group said. The plunge in orders follows a 15.9-percent drop in January. The slowdown in mobile-phone and personal computer industries is forcing chipmakers to cut back capital investment and reduce purchases of steppers, wafer-processing equipment and other gear. Orders by Japanese buyers of locally made and imported chipmaking equipment fell 34.5 to a two-year low of 42.8 billion yen, according to the Semiconductor Equipment Association of Japan. Canon, Nikon and other Japanese suppliers of chipmaking equipment have said customers have canceled or postpned orders.
