The name L-3 represents the names of the founders/main investors, I believe: Lockheed, Lehman Bros, Lanza, although LaPenta (CFO) could be one of L's I suppose. Under the original deal in the Loral spinoff to Lockheed Martin, Lanza became a Lockheed Martin Exec VP, COO and Board member. Some time later, the businesses now constituting L-3 (most or all of which came originally from "old" Loral) were spun off as an independent company under Lanza. L-3 HQ is at the same Manhattan, NY, address as Loral. In fact, I believe it's one floor of the old Loral HQ suite.
