WiLL meet inconclusive, decision by April 30
SAHAD P. V.
New Delhi, April 16, 18:07

The group on telecom and IT convergence (GOT-IT), which met on Monday to take a view on the controversial issue of limited mobility, postponed its decision and agreed to hold another meeting soon.

Emerging after a 3-hour long meeting, Information Technology Minister Pramod Mahajan said GOT-IT would keep its deadline of April 30 for finalising the report on the limited mobility service based on the wireless in local loop (WiLL) technology.

Mahajan said the department of telecommunications made a detailed presentation at the meeting on the various aspects of limited mobility. However, he declined to give details of the meeting.

Even as the limited mobility issue was before the Telecom Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT), the government had earlier referred the matter to GOT-IT to give its recommendations. The group, headed by finance minister Yashwant Sinha, was asked to examine if the New Telecom Policy 1999 permitted limited mobility services to basic operators and if not, whether NTP needed to be amended to accommodate limited mobility.

The group is expected to submit its report by April 30.
