Furthermore, "The company has prepared a downloadable patch that it believes fixes the problem, said Susan Watson, Microsoft's communications director. If the patch works, Microsoft will include it in a new version of the software coming mid-May. Because it's a software bug, it affects all set-top boxes using the UltimateTV service."

1. In lieu of the patch, customers can turn the unit off and back on to reclaim the lost space.
2. Microsoft detailed the steps that cause the issue (deleting a show while playback is paused) so that customers can avoid the issue altogether.
3. If customers want the patch immediately, they can call tech support and get it.

As far as your claim "Microsoft doesn't belong in consumer electronics" - well, Replay and Tivo have both had numerous bugs in their history. Do you expect every player in the DVR marketplace to exit the business when their first bug is discovered?
