Rahman confident of beating champ Lewis

American challenger Hasim Rahman is hard at work perfecting his strategy for the world heavyweight championship clash against Lennox Lewis on April 22.

The challenger does not agree that Lewis is a complex fighter - "there's nothing that tells me this man can't be beaten" - but he admits the champion can be brilliant one moment and dull the next.

"I've seen him in many of his variations. There is not a single thing about him that worries me.

"It's really up to me," Rahman said after training on Saturday.

After six intensive rounds on the heavy bag - digging in heavy rights he hopes will slow down Lewis on fight night - the challenger slackened a bit on the instructions of trainer Adrian Davis.

Rahman is not displaying any signs of worry, nor is he intimidated by Lewis's height and size.

Despite the general opinion that he will be knocked out by Lewis in this "Thunder in Africa" bill, the challenger is confident he will be the new world champ.

"I see an upset in Africa. I'm a winner," Rahman declared as reports filtered through that Lewis has agreed to face one of the Klitschko brothers - Wladimir or Vitali - in December.

Is Lewis overconfident? Will he be in peak physical condition to withstand the altitude? After all, Rahman has been here since March 27 and it appears he has overcome that handicap.

There are fears that the champion's late arrival could be his downfall in the event the bout goes beyond the five rounds in which he hopes to end the fight.

Is Lewis disregarding Rahman's fighting ability?

These are the questions punters are asking as the countdown to the bout begins.

And, come fight night, the champion will be obliged to provide the answers.

However, the champion can only underestimate Rahman at his peril.

The challenger is strong, a potent puncher and, having followed his training sessions since his arrival, is in tip-top condition. He will only have himself to blame in the event of getting beaten.
