(9433) group will debut cellular phones incorporating Bluetooth wireless data transmission technology as soon as June, company sources said Monday. The world's first Bluetooth-enabled cell phones, to be marketed under the group's au brand, will be able to exchange e-mail, video and other data with personal computers wirelessly, company sources said. KDDI targets annual sales of 1 million units. The phones will be produced by such companies as Sony Corp. (6758) and Toshiba Corp. (6502). KDDI plans to switch most of its mobile phones to Bluetooth-based models in two years, reflecting its desire to catch up with NTT DoCoMo Inc. (9437), which has jumped ahead of KDDI in the cell phone-based Internet business with its i-mode service. Bluetooth is a new international standard for wireless communications that employs a frequency band of 2.4GHz, compared with 800Mhz-1.5GHz frequency bands used by conventional cell phones. The communications range for Bluetooth-based phones is around 10m, but they can transmit data at high speeds of up to 1mbps. The standard is expected to be incorporated into almost 700 million PCs and other information terminals worldwide by the end of 2005. (The Nihon Keizai Shimbun Tuesday morning edition)
