Quite aside from the fact that religions have often interfered with the spread of knowledge (such as by placing those who proposed radical ideas, like the Earth is not the center of the Universe), and more currently are waging a campaign to get Creationism taught in schools, the idea of religious organizations running charities in collusion with the government is a disturbing idea due to its more recent checkered past. After all, it was Catholic priests who gathered up blankets from small pox victims to donate to the native Americans in an attempt by the British government to eradicate the heathens.
