Taiwan Semicon Mfg 1Q Utilization Dn To Around 70%-Forbes

TAIPEI (Dow Jones)--Chipmaker Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (TSM)
saw its utilization rate slide to around 70% during the first quarter after
operating at full capacity during the previous three-month period, Forbes
Global magazine said Tuesday.
Utilization at the world's largest pure chip foundry will likely fall to
"very close to 50%" or slightly lower over coming months, TSMC's chairman
Morris Chang told the investment magazine.
Still, Chang said the worst is almost over for the semiconductor industry,
with the bottom likely to be reached in April or May.

"The recovery may not be a very swift and brisk one...but I do think that
the third quarter (of 2001) will be better than the second, and the fourth
will be better than the third," Forbes Global quoted Chang as saying.
