U.S., China Have Reached WTO Admission Accord

BERLIN, Apr 17, 2001 -- (Agence France Presse) The United States and China
have reached agreement on Beijing's admission to the World Trade Organization
(WTO), but hushed up the accord because of the EP-3 spy plane standoff, the
German daily Handelsblatt said in its edition due out on Tuesday.

Both sides agreed on issues concerning Chinese agricultural subsidies, one of the
major sticking points in China's application to the global trade body, said the
economic daily.

It added that the information had been confirmed by a spokesman for the United
States-China Business Council (USCBC) in Washington.

Under the agreement, Beijing would be authorized to subsidize agricultural prices
up to a level of between 7.0 and 8.0 percent.

Until now, Handeslbaltt reported, China has demanded to be considered a
developing country, which would allow it to subsidize prices up to a level of 10
percent.

The United States and other WTO members have refused to accept that level.

Developed countries are only allowed subsidies of up to five percent. ((c) 2001
