Korea, Mongolia agree to expand ties in CDMA field

Information and Communication Minister Yang Seung-taik Monday met with Mongolian
Prime Minister Nambaryn Enkhbayar and agreed to expand cooperation in the CDMA
(code division multiple access) industry between the two countries.

The two ministers agreed to set up specific follow-up measures to an agreement on
cooperation made at a summit meeting between Korea and Mongolia last February
and support the business expansion of Skytel, a Mongolian CDMA operator.

Presently, Korea Telecom holds a 40-percent stake in Mongol Telecom, a wired
telecom operator, while SK Telecom and Taihan Electric Wire are large shareholders
in Skytel, the second largest mobile-phone operator in Mongolia, holding stakes of 25
percent and 35 percent, respectively.

At yesterday's meeting, Yang also promised that his ministry would set aside funds
for inviting Mongolians majoring in IT (information technology) to study in Korea.

Prime Minister Enkhbayar said that Korean CDMA technology very outstanding, and
that the number of CDMA subscribers could soon outpace those for GSM (global
system for mobile communications). He also said that with the adoption of the CDMA
standard, the level of telecommunication services in Mongol has improved greatly.

The minister then asked for more Korean firms to advance into Mongolia and increase
joint ventures with local firms.
