Bombardier Receives an Order for TALENT Multiple Units From the Austrian Federal Railways
MONTREAL, QUEBEC--APRIL 17, 2001 - 10:16 EDT Bombardier Transportation and ELIN EBG Traction were awarded a contract by the Austrian Federal Railways (OBB) for the development and supply of 40 four-car electrical multiple units (EMU) for suburban traffic and 11 three-car electrical multiple units for regional traffic. The contract is valued at approximately Cdn$231 million (166 million Euro). It represents the conversion of the first option of the framework contracts signed for these vehicle types in August 2000.
Development, production and commissioning of the mechanical portion will be done by Bombardier Transportation in Germany and Austria. ELIN EBG Traction, Vienna, will be responsible for the electrical equipment. The delivery of the vehicles will begin in summer 2003.
Modern industrial design, a spacious vehicle interior, air-conditioning and multi-purpose areas for prams, wheelchairs or bicycles make the TALENT attractive for all passengers and caters to their needs. Low-floor entrance at only 590 mm allows quick boarding and alighting. The four-car units, which are 67 m long, can accommodate about 200 seated passengers and will be running mainly on the Vienna rapid transit network. They will replace the type 4020 trains built in the 1960s. The three-car EMUs for regional services are 52 m long and offer 150 seats. They will be in service on regional networks in different Austrian regions.
Since 1998, TALENT-type trains have successfully run in revenue service. Including this contract, some 260 TALENT multiple units have been ordered up to now by different operators in Germany, Norway and Austria.
