J. I think we may be in the midst of transition and restructuring related to moving from the old business model to the new, for telco (and thats why there is such exteme turmoil and murkyness). It will be interesting to see when long distance rates just go to the cellphone model, where you pay a monthly fee for all your local and long distance calls. Then you will be paying for a connection, and the amount of bandwidth. The invisible hand of the free market is working over the industry, but eventually strength will return, and companies like Cisco will accelerate there aquisition program as needed to stay on course.

Media Alert - Cisco Calling! Cisco Systems Demonstrates IP Telephony Technology at Summit of the Americas Media Centre
SUMMIT OF THE AMERICAS, QUEBEC CITY, April 17 /CNW/ - Cisco Systems, the worldwide leader in networking for the Internet, is bringing voice technology into the new millennium, and introducing it to visiting journalists -- at the Summit of the Americas. For the first time ever, Cisco Systems will connect an international event of this magnitude to the world through Internet Protocol (IP) telephony, a state-of-the-art technology that transports voice over the Internet.
The first-of-its-kind Cisco Systems Media Centre will deliver voice and data connectivity to 3,000 journalists from around the globe. The facility is equipped with 400 Cisco IP phones connected to a highly efficient network based on Cisco AVVID technology. AVVID (Architecture for Video, Voice and Integrated Data) allows for the consolidation of data and voice into a single network infrastructure. With IP phones, calls are transmitted over an Internet-based data network as opposed to a standard telephone exchange network, offering the benefits of cost-efficiency, ease of administration and management, and the opportunity to implement many integrated applications such as unified messaging, video conferencing and video streaming.

Experience the technology of tomorrow -- today!

-----------------------------------------------

Cisco will be demonstrating the power of IP telephony and the functionality of the Cisco IP phones from April 19-22 in the Cisco Systems Media Centre. Demonstrations will include:

- Unified Messaging: Unified messaging consolidates voice mail, e-mail
and fax reception. Retrieve all your messages from a single source and
view email and faxes on your telephone screen. With the Cisco IP Phone,
users can identify incoming messages and categorize them. With Virtual
Intelligence Assistants, users can personalize communications and route
calls as required. Calls from your mother can be automatically routed
to voicemail; calls from your boss or customer can be routed to your
cellphone if you're out of the office.

- IP SoftPhone: Cisco IP SoftPhone is a Windows-based application for the
PC. With Cisco IP SoftPhone running on a laptop you can take your
extension with you and receive calls wherever you are connected to the
corporate network. Dial-up connections can be used to check voicemail
and place calls while online.

- Cisco CallManager: Cisco CallManager is the intelligent call-processing
software component of Cisco AVVID. CallManager provides signaling and
call control services and allows businesses to scale to 10,000 users
and triple call processing capability.

- Cisco Intelligent Contact Management (ICM) Solutions: ICM is the
customer contact centre of the future -- today. Using network-provided
data, caller-entered digits, and information obtained from a customer-
profile database, ICM determines who is calling and why. At the same
time, it tracks the resources available to meet the customer's needs
based on real-time information gathered from contact centre systems.

- Web Information Services: Access diverse web-based information such as
news, stock, weather or traffic information.

For a live demonstration of IP telephony technology, visit the demo station at the Cisco booth on the floor of the Summit of the Americas Media Centre. For reporters and editors who can not attend in person, Cisco Systems will also be scheduling one-on-one telephone briefings with on-site IP telephony experts.
