We don't. That's why I frequently post definitions from my dictionary, to check the reality of others. If you had a really old dictionary you would be in a different work reality than the one I am in. Words can be very subjective (especially if you define them by context, I've watched children do this- they are frequently close, but no cigar)- which is why the indoctrinating pressure of the dictionary is an aide to communication.

Constant verification is necessary in good communication. First define the language you will use. If I speak English to you and you speak Russian to me, and neither of us can speak the others language we will not communicate well. Next agree that words have at least one of the meanings the dictionary says they have. If the meaning is not there, use a different word that means what you want. Or use a whole bunch of words to describe what you are trying to get across. When that fails throw up you hands and say the following "I can't explain it."

I have to go miniature golfing now.
