A mother and child both exist; there is nothing improbable about the mother loving the child. A mother who has no child, but points to empty space and says "this is my beloved child" does not love a child, she loves a fictional construct.

People are quite capable of loving something that isn't there. They can talk to something that isn't there, and even contrive to believe that they are being answered. The love is quite real, but the thing that isn't there is not.

Demonstrating the existence of an entity is a bit different from demonstrating the existence of an emotion, if that's not already clear.
