Oil imports pose a major environmental threat. It's been estimate that by 2020, more than 30 giant supertankers, each loaded with 500,000 barrels of crude oil, will have to dock at U.S. ports every day. And more than 10,000 ships, most foreign, will have to pass our coastlines every year.
That creates a much larger environmental risk than developing our own oil fields in Alaska and piping the oil to the lower states.
Do you deny this reality? Of course not. In future posts, I predict, you won't even address the issue in a thoughtful way.
It's not good enough to simply be against something which risks damage to the environment, without examining the things which would replace it. Not drilling for oil guarantees more supertankers will traverse our harbors and waterways. Not building nuclear power plants, practically guarantees more coal will be used. One energy solution must be weighed against another. Because, in the final analysis, we will get our energy needs met. It just depends from what source. |
