Russ/CC, thanks for the broker tips.
I went ahead and enhanced my existing TD Waterhouse account to trade Canadian stocks. They told me twice that even though I have an online account for american stocks that I could not trade Canadian stocks online. I would have to phone my order in to a live broker. I suppose this conspicuous inability of Americans to trade Canadian stocks online is thanks to the Canadian brokerage industry fighting tooth and nail to protect their exorbitantly high commission structures.

But they emphasised that my order would go straight to the Canadian exchange (thanks to there TD Greenline operation). The other advantage is that I will have a separate Canadian currency account to hold cash in Canadian $, in between trades.
