They want actual proof, at a level and of a kind acceptable to them.

I said before that I would settle for one good reason to believe. A few reasons that I do not think are good:

"Because lots of other people believe"

"Because life is more meaningful if we believe"

"Because we will behave better if we believe"

"Because somebody else has had personal contact with God"

and so on....

Those who choose not to learn are uneducable.

Those who choose to deceive themselves will remain deceived.

In the absence of any credible reason to believe, I think disbelief is quite a reasonable default choice.
