State of California Launches Ariba-Powered State-Wide eProcurement System

Ariba Buyer Provides Foundation for State's CAL-Buy On-Line Buying System

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Calif., April 17 /PRNewswire/ -- Ariba Inc., (Nasdaq: ARBA) the leading business-to-business (B2B) eCommerce platform and network services provider, today announced that the State of California is now live with the Ariba(R) Buyer(TM) solution as the foundation of CAL-Buy, a statewide strategic eProcurement initiative developed by the California Department of General Services' (DGS) Procurement Division. The DGS, CALTRANS and the California Highway Patrol are the first agencies to have access to the new Web-based CAL-Buy system.

Powered by Ariba Buyer, CAL-Buy will enable state employees to use an online, desktop purchasing system to facilitate the annual procurement of approximately $2 billion in goods and services. To date, over 50 employees in three state agencies have access to 180 suppliers through the CAL-Buy system. CAL-Buy is expected to save time and money by streamlining and automating product catalog searches, order approval, transactions and receipts, allowing DGS to better manage supply and services procurement and supplier relations.

"The State of California is a welcome addition to our growing roster of government institutions using Ariba Buyer to eliminate inefficiencies in their business processes," said Jerry Connell, director, Public Sector, Ariba. "We are pleased to bring the benefits of eCommerce to the governing organization of a state that, if weighed as an independent country, would rank sixth in the world in gross domestic product. With CAL-Buy, the State of California will enjoy significant savings in employee time and procurement costs, which translates to better use of taxpayer dollars."

"Whether we are purchasing school buses or computers, state purchasing agents can use CAL-Buy to order the products needed to keep the State of California operating," said Governor Gray Davis. "CAL-Buy will automate existing contracts for goods and services. This will lead to greater efficiencies while reducing government costs."

Ariba Buyer is the industry's leading Internet application for automating and managing corporate sourcing, buying and internal business processes, from planning to payment, to travel and expense. All Ariba Buyer customers have instant access to over 30,000 suppliers worldwide through the Ariba Commerce Services Network(TM) (Ariba CSN), allowing for transparent collaboration between buyers and suppliers. Ariba CSN is Ariba's network infrastructure for connecting buyers and suppliers and to deliver commerce services to companies in the B2B ecosystem.

Accenture, a systems integrator of Ariba, worked with DGS to implement andintegrate Ariba Buyer with the state's financial and human resources solutions.
