Mercer, even now, would be a very tough fight for Tyson. I agree.

Re: the Francis' and Savareses, as tune-ups, yes - they've been cardboard cutouts. That has been the case recently, with the exception of Holyfield. Such wasn't always the case, either; Tyson fought Ruddock, Bruno, James Smith...and a host of other heavyhitters before his recent run for the belt started.

The same could be said for John Ruiz, who was KO'ed in the first round versus his only "top ten" quality competitor before HolyCow in the last 5 years, Dave Tua.

If Tyson fights and beats Lennox Lewis, he'll have no say in hand-picking competitors. He'll have to fight anyone, and everyone, who comes along: Whitaker, Klitschko, possibly Holyfield again, Johnson, Donald, possibly Tua, you name 'em.
