OK, John. Let's take this conversation out of the clouds and bring it into reality. A few years back, my team built an Internet application that reduced headcount by 8 people. Those 8 people were repurposed to areas within the company that needed them more, since their jobs were automated. Only 1 person remained because, he was needed to make sure the system continued to work. In addition, he was in charge of enhancing the app. Those 8 people cost the company about $320K per year. The app cost $150K to build, with ongoing support and maintenance totalling about $150K since then. So we've saved close to $1M so far in salaries and spent $300K on the application. That's a $700K savings. The Internet is real. You are using flawed heuristics, just because these projects may not be in your daily purview. In addition, this is just one of many projects I've worked on throughout the many years, I've been in the industry. I could name at least a dozen others.
