Newport Corp (NEWP) 38.17 +6.09: Reports Q1 earnings of $0.40 a share, $0.04 better than the First Call consensus of $0.36, vs year-ago earnings of $0.15; revenues rose 103.6% to $106.70 mln from a year-ago of $52.40 mln. Fiber optic communications sales increased 165 percent in the first quarter of 2001 to $44.6 million compared with $16.8 million in the same period last year.
