I wasn't joking, debt levels and financing risk are going to be a big concern for lots of telecom companies and their shareholders. :(( The trouble with broadband is that it is quite expensive and seems to lack a really compelling killer app. At one time I thought it would take off once it reached about 10% of internet households but now I am not so sure. Moore's law should bring the cost down over time, and the Bells will hopefully get better at installing it. Unless some really popular new app is developed that only works over broadband then I think it may not become widespread until the cost comes down.
