Jerry in Omaha,

I am overwhelmed with the variety of initiatives and ideas which are active in the market places. At your suggestion, I took a look at the MECH engine - clever! Capstone microturbines use 'air barings' instead of traditional ones - to reduce wear and tear.

Alot of these ideas are close to market but find it hard to compete against fossil fuels. What we need is a "carbon tax" for a limited period of time in order to create the incentive to get critical mass for some of these ideas. This is not likely to happen in the US, but rather in Europe or elsewhere. The Economist supports this idea.

The solar/geothermal idea is another good one. Iceland is the place to watch - lots of geothermal, no fossil fuels, highly educated population and a commitment to developing a hydrogen economy.
