I see the competition for the i960RP/RD and I2O as custom controller
chips that sell for a few dollars a piece. My questions is how will
i960-based boards compete against existing controller boards when the
price or a i960 alone is priced 5X to 10X higher than a custom
contoller chip? I guess we
need to be a little specific here. My understanding is that I2O-based
designs are intended to be used in disk controllers, network interface
cards, and backup tape controllers. On desktop PCs, these kinds of controller boards retail for $20 to $30. How can the i960 play in this market?
