Double click your "My Computer" icon and right click your C drive and select properties. This should give you used space, free space and capacity. Capacity is the size. That question was really just a feeble attempt at humor. I don't think any conventional size drive would take that long to scan.

I'm not using Norton to defrag, I'm using the built in one

That's exactly why I'd take it out. Maybe one of Nortons utilities is the one that has it locked. Uninstalling Norton may or may not unlock the disk, I don't know. At least it's quicker and less painful than a reinstall of ME. Trying to fix it this way is the chicken way out but unless we get other suggestions....squawk...squawk (another attempt at humor)
