Boxer dies following first professional bout

April 19, 2001

PUEBLO, Colo. (AP) -- Featherweight boxer Cresencio Mercado, who collapsed in the ring after celebrating a knockout victory in his first professional bout, has died of a brain injury.

The 19-year-old fighter from Pueblo died Wednesday. Doctors found a blood clot in his brain, suspected to have come from a previous injury, said a spokeswoman for Parkview Hospital

First-round knockout victim Oscar Molina of Denver said Mercado never was hit with a solid punch during the bout Saturday.

Mercado, originally from Zacatecas, Mexico, climbed on top of the ring ropes and waved his arms after the win. But he started having leg tremors when he returned to his corner, and collapsed.

The former state Golden Gloves champion remained on life-support and never was stabilized or regained consciousness during the week, the spokeswoman said.
