I originally thought this the case, but Full Screen Mode still displays a cursor, and in most cases, a prompt.
CL reported hearing a clicking from the monitor. My old monitor did this when switching display modes. I pounced (note the cat term) on the idea that her system had put the display into a graphics mode, and an even further possibility, was displaying a screen page other than page zero.
On my system, MODE ???? works within a DOS window just fine. On hers, evidently not.
In Windows, a DOS window is a fabrication of the OS. An area of the screen, now in graphics mode, is devoted to appearing as a text screen. Text display, a function of hardware in DOS, is produced artificially as Windows draws text with a similar appearance. In short, a DOS window is simply an area on a graphics screen where text is drawn.
The question we're trying to answer is why is this process not functioning properly on CL's system. Until now, we've been trying to define what's happening and eliminate some obvious sources of trouble. So far, guesses lead to tests, and tests in turn lead to further guesses, but no real answers.
I have not yet determined how Windows opens a DOS window. If I knew the answer to this, I'd be much further along in solving CL's mystery.
Perhaps more experienced thread participants will contribute further suggestions.
