<<<to reinstall all I do is put the disk in and follow a few simple onscreen instructions.>>>
We're back to what's simple, i'm afraid.
Of the thread headings that appear when you put in the CD, none are How To Install.
There is Browse This CD, Interactive CD Sampler, and Online Documentation.
So I clicked on Browse This CD. Ten items showed. I didn't know whether I should read them all or not. Seemed like it would take a very long time. I opened the file called "setuptip" and many preliminaries are discussed. One is to disconnect from the internet.
This reminded me that someone here had suggested I try disconnecting from my cable connection before defragging and i'd never done that, so I did it and tried to defrag; but unfortunately that hadn't been the problem.
In any case, I now know that when I reinstall, I have to shut off my cable connection to the net first, and I didn't know that.
Many cautions about backing everything up. (I have some things backed up but not everything important, my bookmarks for example, which i haven't figured out yet how to do; that was my next project after this problem is solved.)
I didn't read the other nine items offered by the Browse button, but went on to button #2, "Interactive CD Sampler." I got, a couple of clicks in, "You are now ready to install the MS Interactive CD Sampler."
I don't know what this "Sampler" is. Is WinME the "Sampler?" It must either be WindowsME, or some preliminary step to installing WindowsME. I got out of there until I knew. Why would they call WinMe a "sampler," I wonder.
I started reading in the manual, which assumes a new install. One thing I wonder is whether, since I have, from the WinMe Startup Disk that they say to create before you install, may I use that one?
Anyway, I haven't yet reinstalled WinMe. I may do Norton first, I think.
EDIT P.S... Have you ever been sick or known somebody who was sick with something their doctor couldn't cure? The doctor gets really annoyed at the sick patient after a while. I wouldn't blame everybody on this this thread at all for being annoyed at me at this point. I feel that way myself. |
