The theme of this year's demonstration is "open the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to Oil Production." The event, organized by the Ayn Rand Institute and by the Center for the Moral Defense of Capitalism, is billed as a demonstration in support of industry and technology. Environmentalists claim that opening ANWR to oil exploration would cause massive and irreparable harm to the Alaskan wilderness. "The only 'massive and irreparable harm' is to the truth," said Nick Provenzo, CMDC chairman, in a statement. He calls oil "the very lifeblood of modern civilization," and he accuses environmentalists of attempting to "bleed dry the arteries of American commerce."
