This seemingly provocative question you keep posing edamo, is, IMO, the wrong one for investors. The easy answer to your question is that the economy is a lot better than 1973 on most quantitative and qualitative measures.

However, the more relevant question should be: is the future profit potential of US companies better than 1973. My own answer to this question is: probably not. To make a long story short, I think that ultra cheap communications, globalization, instant information dissemination, and eager hungry billions in China, India, etc. make consistent profits in today's world a lot harder for US companies in most fields, and particularly in technology. It seems that for every Cisco there is a number of Globalstars or Lucents. And even the Ciscos are not doing very well.

I think the ultimate winners will be the consumers of the world, not the companies that deliver the goods to them.
