Brian, TA *** [edited -corrected bad chart links] since you asked: one TA method simply has you buy when the weekly price exceeds the 30 week ma on high volume while also exceeding the upper trading channel line. That signal has been given. stockcharts.com[w,a]waclyymy[pb30][vc60][iUb14!La12,26,9!Lc20]

I follow this for reference and make lots of exceptions in the case of AMAT. This method completely ignores what the rest of the market is doing.

PnF has given a buy signal for AMAT also. First a weaker one at 43 and a strong one at 54. stockcharts.com
BUT, a careful PnFer will also look at the NYSEbp and that is in 'bear correction' status. It won't reach 'bull confirmed' until 50% of NYSE stocks are on a buy signal. At 50 it exceeds the previous column of Xs. Now it's only at 44%. stockcharts.com

To sum up: with PnF you would not buy because the market is not a bull market yet, even though the stock is performing very well. Many PnFers modify these rules for their own trading. But I find it useful to be aware at least.

Unfortunately all this PnFing does require some study [it's not hard - but it is hard to suspend judgement about the method until understood. After my first reading of the book's first chapter I was ready to return it to Amazon, mostly because I don't understand football analogies well<g>]
