Alcatel Selects Mentor Graphics as Intellectual Property
'Core Store'

'Virtual Library' Business Model Slashes Design Time for Complex Chips

DESIGN AUTOMATION CONFERENCE, ANAHEIM, Calif., June 10 /PRNewswire/ -- Mentor
Graphics Corporation (Nasdaq:MENT) today announced that Alcatel, a world leader in
the telecommunications equipment market, has selected Mentor Graphics Corporation's
Inventra* Business Unit as its primary supplier of reusable ``cores.'' Inventra Soft
Cores* are pre-designed, pre-verified, functional building blocks for
systems-on-a-chip. Inventra's innovative business model, the ``Virtual Library,''
provides all Alcatel engineers with worldwide access to the entire catalog of more
than 100 tool-independent Inventra Soft Cores.

``Alcatel develops a significant number of ASICs and ICs over the course of a year,
so the company consistently seeks to boost efficiency,'' said Johan Danneels,
director, Industrial Coordination, Alcatel, and president and CEO, Alcatel Mietec.
``The Inventra Virtual Library will help us cut development cycles by as much as 50
percent through access to strategic cores that we can easily integrate into our
design flows.''

Alcatel's chips are used in a broad range of critical communications systems around
the globe. The Virtual Library business model enables Alcatel to cost-effectively
achieve the next major productivity gain in chip design through widespread
implementation of a ``building block'' methodology. It also will complement Alcatel's
internal design reuse efforts. By downloading Inventra Soft Cores from a single
centralized source for standard functions, engineering teams can rapidly create
alternative architectures that free them to focus on development and reuse of
proprietary designs, thereby shortening time-to-market.

The Virtual Library model lets design teams easily download any Inventra Soft Core
for exploration and utilization within the design. Alcatel engineers will use the
Virtual Library to rapidly source and implement reusable design components for
critical telecommunications applications, including microPABXs and access
multiplexors.

Virtual Library licenses are available immediately. Licensing fees start at $2
million, and include installation of the Virtual Library at the customer site, and
training. The Virtual Library also offers customers access to any new cores added to
the product line.

Alcatel, the telecommunication sector of Alcatel Alsthom Group, is a worldwide
company, currently working with partners in over 125 countries on projects which span
the full spectrum of communications systems. Alcatel Telecom is a system integrator
in the telecommunications field. It manufactures advanced digital switches,
transmission systems, broadband products, access products, radio mobile communication
systems, business systems, systems and products for space and defense, and
components. In 1996, these activities registered total sales of French Francs 71
billion.

The Inventra Business Unit of Mentor Graphics is the world's leading independent
creator and distributor of reusable intellectual property for the system-on-chip
industry. The extensive Inventra product line provides EDA tool-independent cores,
memories, physical libraries, embedded software and services. Inventra's IP products
lower the cost of implementing design reuse, allowing designers more time to focus on
unique, value-added circuitry.

Mentor Graphics Corporation is a world leader in electronic hardware and software
design solutions, providing products and consulting services for the world's largest
electronics and semiconductor companies. Established in 1981, the company reported
revenues over the last 12 months of $440,392,000 and employs approximately 2,570
people worldwide. Company headquarters are located at 8005 S.W. Boeckman Road,
Wilsonville, Oregon 97070-7777. World Wide Web site: mentorg.com.
