As several posts over the last week have mentioned, Intel has
estimated i960 volume at 7M to 10M for the 12 to 18 months
beginning in 1998. If I remember correctly, the estimate for
the current year was something like 1M - 1.5M. A previous
post this week reminded the thread of Intel's statement that
ALL PentiumPro motherboards would be shipping with I2O by year-
end. Third-party LAN and disk subsystems will also be shipping,
that's why it is more accurate to look at i960 volume, rather
than Pentium volume. I don't know the estimates for Pentium
shipments. Please realize that I2O can, and is, implemented on
the PC motherboard and/or various I2O device controller boards.
An older PCI-based PC, that does not have I2O on the motherboard,
can still use I2O implemented on the LAN interface or SCSI
controller, for instance. RAID disk subsystems are another active
area for I2O designs.

As far as OS support, I saw binaries for Microsoft, Novell, and SCO
listed on the www.i2osig.org site. I would think that SUN Solaris
will follow at some point. The other I2O benefit I mentioned in my
previous post to you was device driver portability. I2O only needs
one OSM (Operating System Module) driver for a particlar OS to be
able to operate with ALL I2O devices. The actual physical device
driver(s) are resident within i960/IxWorks I/O subsystem and are OS
independent.
