Tom:

Great find. But talk about competition in the digital plate market,.
Its more than I imagined. For the longs, it was positive as to the Presstek product as being the only processless plate. However, all competitors are also working on processless plates, and it noted the limitations of the Presstek system. All Competitors are developing processless plates.

A few highlights (more to come when I have time to organize is:

Under Plate suppliers the introduction says a lot about the competition:

"SEVERAL ISSUES ARE likely to dominate the discussion at Imprinta about plate suppliers:
-The ONSLAUGHT OF NEW THERMAL PLATES, OFFERED BY MANY OF THE PAST SUPPLIERS OF CTP PLATES.
- The impending sale of Dupont's offset plate and film business to Agfa, which already had a successful business in both areas. A LOT OF DEBATE AND DISCUSSION WILL GO INTO WHAT IT MEANS FOR THE INDUSTRY.
- THE FIRST PROCESSLESS CTP PLATE IN THE PRESSTEK BOOTH
- The Imation proofing material running the same engines as plates.
- The daylight-loading casettes being offered by Agfa and Mitsubishi for use wiht light-sensitive plates.

Agfa, with the acquistion of Dupont is the the dominant player in digital plates with Fuji.

A new technology, due for completion in the year 2000 from Goss Graphics (a spinoff from Rockwell) is "a new technology press with an
erasable cylinder that is imaged directly from a computer. Called Automated Image Makeready (AIM)"

"AIM's on-press imaging and reimaging cabability breaks the barriers of web press run lengths.

What is clear from this article, is that any thought that Presstek was going to dominate, or even be a significant player in this market is misplaced. The competition is huge.

Based upon this article, I intend to increase my short position.
