However, if they're sick and tired of the impasse and want to find something on which they can agree to work together, like making adoptions more available or reducing the demand for abortions, it can work.

They can possibly even work together on things like this without giving up the fight on the main issue. Of course if your fighting about one thing you are less likely to cooperate on another but it is not imposible. Many pro-life groups do work to try and promote adoption, but they are less likely to support your second example.
