<<<Do a selective install of the import export function from the program disk. I dont know why but when I installed "office" the import/export didnt install and I had to do it afterward. in fact I exported to Yahoo address book as a back up and for access anywhere in the world >>>

Reporting further adventures in cluelessness...

I put in the Office2000 Pro CD to see if a selective install seemed like something I could manage. The CD Rom Drive made that whirring revving up sound, but then nothing happened. Tried it a few times, nothing appeared on the monitor, the drive got silent after a minute.

I went to Outlook and stared at things sullenly for a while. The import/export options under File in my Address Book were still bleached out. But I got an idea, and left Address Book and brought up "Contacts" from the dropdown menu under Inbox. Which is the information in the address book. The Outlook File button (as opposed to the address book itself) did have Import and Export as live options. I decided to try to save the Contact list to a floppy.

I took out the CD and put in a floppy and started that process.

I got a message saying something like that Windows couldn't start the Import Export Function, did I want to install it?

Of course I said yes.

It told me to put in the Office2000 CD, which I did.

It told me to wait while Windows configured Office 2000.

It seemed like things were going fine, and when the time seemed right, I tried again to save the Contacts list to the floppy.

I got a message saying that the process might take a few minutes and couldn't be cancelled. I said do it anyway.

That thing that shows you papers flying through the air as though something is being transferred showed up for a couple of seconds.

That's the last notable thing that happened. It's been silent ever since.

I would assume the Contact list was on that floppy, except that earlier today when I managed to back up my Favorites to a floppy, a satisfying message informing me that it had worked successfully appeared. This time nothing appeared.

In summary:

I wonder why when I put in the Office2000 CD nothing happened after the initial revving-up sound.

I wonder what's on that floppy, if anything, and why no completion message was given.

Also, I wonder whether, if the contact list is on the floppy, it would be able to be directly transferred into the address book in the future, or is it just a floppy version of the printed out contacts I already have. (That's not so bad, but I do wonder.)

Going now to remove and reinsert that floppy and see what shows up. I guess i'll do the same with the Favorites floppy from this morning. The suspense....

EDIT:

I inserted both the Favorites floppy (which Windows told me had been successfully made) and the Contacts one (which did seem to be very passive) into Drive A, and nothing happened on the monitor in either case.

I'm thinking maybe there's some sort of open sesame I don't know about for making the contents of those floppies reveal themselves...
