Re: 3/28/01 - Reader responses to NH Register article "Police, Jovin family are desperate to find murderer"

Name: Leslie Wrigley

In his novel Bonfire of the Vanities, Tom Wolfe describes the search for the great white defendant. Could this explain why police were eager to blame Van de Velde?

Name: Carl Lender

This New Haven Police Department has implicated the wrong person and refuses to let go. What gives them the right to destroy a person's life just to cover up the fact that they don't have any evidence? They have just made a bad situation worse. Chief Wearing needs to face it! He rolled the dice with Van de Velde and he was wrong, now he needs to apologize and resign!

I do not believe the person responsible for for this terrible crime knew miss Jovin.it seems as though she was in a hurry to reach the area where she was attacked.i think it was a stranger, probably a man, with other things on his mind,i don't think signs of sexual assault were present, because she never allowed it to get that far.miss jovin may have put up enough of a fight, to the point of frustration and anger, and finally an uncontrollable rage.

Why are the New Haven Police just now telling the public about the existence of a tan van at the crime scene? Why doesn't the Register question the timing of the release of this information? This article states "Jovin was attacked at the intersection of..." This is where Jovin was found. No one knows where she was attacked. Also, it is complete conjecture on the part of the police to assume she "got a ride from someone she knew". This investigation and the Register's coverage of it should be grounded in facts, not suppositions.

'The head of detectives at the time and his second-in-command also retired." Now that's an understatement! Brian Sullivan and Edward Kendall retired to avoid disciplinary action against them for their roles in the mishandling of evidence in the Cusick murder case. This is exactly the type of behavior which has severely hampered the investigation into the Jovin murder.
