Funny, I never thought of free trade as a classically left-wing idea. Frankly, I find it rather odd that people far left-of center and far right of center seem to hate free trade, although for very different reasons.

i don't know anyone who hates free trade per se. on paper the concept is wonderful.
the problem has been and continues to be that even as we have opened our borders to increased imports...the importers have closed theirs to USA made goods. there are hundreds of examples of USA companies being prohibited from exporting to other countries.

here are 2 quick examples:
japan never let us export American rice to them...even when they had a rice shortage and ours was much cheaper.
japan has severe limits on US made auto imports.

i am not picking on japan...there are plenty (too many) of other examples in europe and elsewhere in asia.

my point is that free trade works well if you are a foreign manufacturer shipping to the USA...free trade sucks if you are an American manufacturer shipping overseas.

when japan limits rice imports...the news reads that they are protecting the small farmer...the little guy. how nice.

when the USA attempts to limit any import...the news reads that free trade is essential to economic growth, and we are going to endanger the financial health of the entire world.
how awful.
