If it makes you feel better, San Jose CA and immediate neighbor communities will not have cable modem until sometime in the 2002-2006 timeframe. Assuming AT&T can keep to even that schedule.

DSL is available, if you're one of the lucky 60% who aren't too far from the CO and aren't zapped by interference from the jungle of T1's, ISDN and whatever which are already installed in the cable bundles.
