While SI's policies may have had some marginal effect on the popularity of the site, I think that the biggest factor was very clearly the explosion of the "bubble". When people were seeing their portfolios increase by thousand of $ or tens of thousands of $ A DAY it became an obsession with them to be online sharing their glories and their brilliance.

Those days are gone. What you're pretty much left with now are the folks that actually want to share information and ideas/thoughts about what they see and hear.

As far as SI's business model goes, they clearly screwed up early on by offering "lifetime" memberships to folks. While that did bring in some nice change in the early days it has left no downstream revenues for them.

I'm afraid SI will sooner or later go the way of almost all the other "virtual" businesses.
