True story

Or consider the story (also supposedly true) at the beginning of Magnolia: a guy jumps from the top of a building, intending to kill himself (suicide note included). Unbeknownst to him, there was a big tarp or cushion or something at the base of the building, which would save him. However, before he could fall to safety, he was fatally shot on the way down by a shotgun fired through a window in the building. The gun was held by his mother, who was aiming it at his father. Normally, the gun was unloaded (the mom or the dad picked it up when they fought, which was often), but the would-be suicide had loaded it some time earlier in the hopes that one of them would do the other in. In fact, his suicide attempt was motivated in part by his parents' incessant fighting. In any case, the mother shot and killed her son and was booked (maybe for involuntary manslaughter).
