Deadly E. coli found in Alberta beef

Ground beef from Alberta and shipped across Canada may be contaminated with the deadly E. coli bacteria, The Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) warned Sunday.
Some people in Saskatchewan have already become sick because of the contaminated beef, which was produced at a packaging plant at Lakeside Packers in Brooks, Alta. on March 1.
The CFIA warned that the beef will not look or smell spoiled.
"Although the likelihood of any remaining affected products being sold at the retail level is limited, some consumers may have stored affected products in their freezers," the agency said.
"For this reason, the CFIA is asking consumers not to consume ground beef products purchased at affected retail outlets bearing dates on or between March 1, 2001 and March 18, 2001."
Stores that were shipped the contaminated beef include Costco, Sobey’s, National Grocers, Western Grocers, Supervalue, Franco Foods, and others.
E. coli is a deadly bacteria that may cause life-threatening illness by producing a toxin that breaks down the lining of the intestines and damages the kidneys. |
