Clinton urges Americans to support paying down federal debt

By Heidi Przybyla / Bloomberg News

East Lansing -- President Bill Clinton urged Americans to support paying down the nation's federal debt, saying America's economic future hangs in the balance.
"It makes a huge difference to your future which way we go," he told about 12,500 people who filled the basketball arena at Michigan State University. "America should keep going until we're debt-free."
President-elect George W. Bush takes over from Clinton on Jan. 20, and he has said he will press ahead with his plan for tax cuts, which critics say will drain the budget surplus.
Clinton is giving a series of speeches before he leaves office on challenges the nation faces in areas from foreign policy to education. In today's speech he sought to firm up his legacy on the economy, which is now slowing.
Clinton has presided over the longest period of economic growth in U.S. history. He noted economic accomplishments during his speech, including turning the nation's $290 billion deficit into a $240 billion surplus this year and decreasing unemployment from 7.3 to 4 percent.
"Think about where we are now and where we were eight years ago" when interest rates were high, growth was low and the "confidence of the American people was shaken," he said
