They've done to the mobile phone what Apple did for the personal computer: packaging the technology of the day in a form the consumer wants. They were the first to conceive of the idea that mobile phones don't have to be designed in a functional, industrial style, like hand held calculators always have been. As far as I can tell, the relationship they have cultivated with the Parisian design houses and the fashion design industry here in the U.S. is unique. There's nothing stopping Motorola and Ericsson from doing likewise but, as far as I can tell, they just haven't, though it likes Ericsson is trying to do better in this regard.
