This reference design is a complete fiber optic module system targeted at Fibre Channel and storage area network applications. The reference platform features:
Honeywell HFE4380-321 Vertical Cavity Surface Emitting Laser (VCSEL) diodes
Micrel SY88922 & SY88905 driver IC's to control PECL compatible data
Xicor X9258 quad 256 tap digitally controlled potentiometers for complete control of modulation current, bias current and monitor current

The module reference design demonstrates solutions to some of the key design challenges facing fiber optic module designers today: temperature compensation, control of the ``knee'' or threshold effect, and accurate monitoring of average optical power output.
